Our Story

How it all started on Bremond Street...

Colquitt Free Will Baptist was founded in 1947 when Reverend Henry L. Catrett hosted a tent revival with the purpose of organizing the church with those present. There were already several FWB churches in the county, but none in the city, so Brother Catrett knew there was a need. There were 19 charter members of the church and the first services, after the tent, were held in the Miller County Courthouse. In September of 1947, a lot was purchased on Bremond Street where the first block structure was built.
Throughout the 50s and 60s the church saw much growth and progress. On October 4, 1971 the church approved a motion to purchase land on the corner of Brinson Road and Grow Street in order to build the future home of Colquitt Free Will Baptist Church. A ground breaking ceremony was held in June of 1973 and construction began by the men in the church. They worked at least three nights a week from 1973-1975 until it was complete. The first service was held in January of 1975 with 69 members present. The church continued to grow through the 80s and 90s. The first "youth and event building" was built in 1990 and was located where the current gymnasium was built.

Grow Street ministries...

The current sancutuary was built in 1999 and 2000 with the gymnasium addition in 2014. Colquitt Free Will Baptist Church has been continuously characterized by a special spirit for these 7 decades. A spirit of togetherness, unity, and care for each and every person who comes through the doors. Despite her ups and downs, financial hard times, disagreements, and disappointments, the congregation has endured and remained together...remained a family.

As we go into the future, we are encompassing all of the programs that we have under the umbrella of Grow Street Ministries. Through this we look forward to continuing to reach out, educate, encourage, and build the congregation, not only of our local church, but the overall body of Christ. We are excited about moving ahead faithfully and boldly in the future staying "rooted in Christ" while "branching out and reaching others."
